How Long Will My Bathroom Remodel Take? | SenkusBuild on Realistic Timelines

If you’re planning a bathroom remodel, one of the first questions on your mind is probably:
“How long will my bathroom be out of commission?”

At SenkusBuild, we get this question from homeowners all over Lake Zurich, Crystal Lake, Barrington, Prairie Grove, Deer Park, and pretty much every suburb in the northwest Chicago area. Here’s what you can realistically expect.

What’s Typical?

For a standard 5x10 bathroom—like guest baths, kids’ bathrooms, or even smaller master suites—a full gut remodel usually takes us about 2 to 3 weeks from start to finish. This covers demolition, plumbing, tile, waterproofing, fixtures, and all the finishing touches.
In the best-case scenario, with all materials on-site and all decisions made, we’ve finished remodels in as little as 10 days. But for most projects, a 2–3 week timeline is honest and achievable.

What Can Slow Things Down?

The biggest holdups are permits and materials. Waiting for custom vanities, special-order tiles, or slow permit approvals can stretch the timeline. Most towns in our service area—whether it’s Crystal Lake, Lake Zurich, Barrington, Prairie Grove, or Deer Park—require plumbing and electrical inspections. Scheduling these can sometimes add a few days, but the process is pretty similar across the suburbs.

Do You Help With Design?

Yes! We help guide you through design decisions and provide a handy checklist so you can have all materials ready before we start. The fastest remodels always happen when everything is picked out and on-site before demo begins.

What About Surprises?

We’ve seen our share of hidden surprises, like old plumbing or mold behind the walls. Honestly, mold is more common than you’d think—but it’s usually a quick fix. If bigger plumbing repairs are needed, we handle them ourselves so you’re not waiting on outside contractors.

Can I Use My Bathroom During the Remodel?

Technically, after waterproofing (usually by day 2 or 3), you could shower—but we don’t recommend it until everything is complete. For families with only one bathroom, we schedule starts early in the week to minimize weekends without a bathroom. In a pinch, we can often get the essentials working in 5 days, then finish up with painting and vanities.

How to Stay On Schedule

Prep is everything:

• Have all materials (tile, fixtures, vanity, lights, etc.) on site
• Empty out the bathroom before we start
• Be ready for some dust and noise—it’s temporary!
