What to Expect During a Bathroom Remodel: Week by Week

Most homeowners we talk to aren't nervous about how their new bathroom will look. They're nervous about the weeks in between — the noise, the dust, the strangers in the house, and the fear that the job will stall halfway through. Knowing what to expect during a bathroom remodel takes most of that anxiety off the table. Here's a realistic, week-by-week look at how a typical full bathroom remodel unfolds, based on how we run projects for homeowners across Crystal Lake, Cary, Barrington, and the rest of the northwest suburbs.

Every bathroom is different, so treat this as a general guide to what to expect during a bathroom remodel, not a promise. A small hall bath moves faster than a primary suite with a custom tile shower, and anything we find behind the walls can change the schedule. But the order of operations stays about the same.

Before Day One: Planning, Selections, and Scheduling

The most important part of the remodel happens before anyone swings a hammer. This is where you settle the layout, pick your tile, fixtures, vanity, and lighting, and get a clear scope and price in writing. It's also where a lot of homeowners get stuck — there are hundreds of tile options, and it's easy to freeze up. Two things to know here. First, permits: depending on your village and the scope of work, your project may need one. (We covered that in detail in our post on bathroom remodel permits in Illinois.) Second, scheduling: we'll be honest with you — pinning down a start date can take some time. But having your selections finalized and materials ordered before demo is what keeps the project from stalling once it starts. A contractor who starts fast and then waits three weeks on a backordered vanity isn't doing you any favors.

Week 1: Demolition and Discovery

Demo is loud, dusty, and fast — usually a day or two for a standard bathroom. The old tile, tub or shower, vanity, toilet, and often the drywall come out down to the studs and subfloor. Before that happens, the work area should be protected: floor coverings along the path from your door to the bathroom, and dust barriers to keep the mess contained. We clean the jobsite at the end of every day, so you're not walking through debris to get to your kitchen.

This is also the week of discovery. Once the walls are open, we can see what's really going on — especially in older homes around Crystal Lake and Lake Zurich, where original bathrooms often have slow leaks, soft subfloor, or outdated plumbing hidden behind perfectly normal-looking tile. If we find something, you'll hear about it right away, with photos and a clear explanation of what it means for cost and schedule. No surprises on the final invoice.

Week 2: Rough-In Plumbing, Electrical, and Framing

With the room stripped, the "bones" go in. That can include moving or updating drain lines and supply lines, setting a new shower valve, framing a shower niche or bench, adding blocking for grab bars or a floating vanity, and running new electrical for lighting, outlets, exhaust fans, or heated floors. If your project needs inspections, this is typically when rough-in inspections happen — before the walls get closed up. It can feel like not much is changing visually this week, but this is the work that determines whether your bathroom functions well for the next 20 years.

Week 3: Waterproofing and Tile Prep — The Step You Never See

Once rough-in is done, the walls and floor get their substrate, and the shower gets waterproofed. We use the Schluter system, which creates a continuous waterproof membrane behind the tile rather than relying on grout and tile to keep water out. This is the part of a bathroom remodel you'll never see once it's finished — and it's exactly where corners get cut on cheaper jobs. Water damage from a poorly waterproofed shower can take years to show up, and by then it usually means tearing everything out again. It's worth asking any contractor exactly how they waterproof before you sign.

Weeks 3–4: Tile Installation

Tile is where the bathroom finally starts to look like the one you picked out. It's also the most detail-heavy stage. Floor tile, shower walls, niches, and any accent work get laid out and set, then grouted after the thinset cures. A simple layout with standard-size tile moves quickly; large-format tile, intricate patterns, or a curbless shower with a sloped floor take more time, and that's time well spent.

Expect some quiet days during this phase. Mortar and grout need curing time, and rushing it is how you end up with cracked grout six months later. If a day goes by without much visible progress, it's usually the materials doing their job, not the crew disappearing.

The Final Week: Fixtures, Finishes, and Walkthrough

The last stretch goes fast and feels great. The vanity and countertop go in, the toilet is set, faucets and shower trim are installed, the glass door or panel is measured and hung, and paint, trim, lighting, mirrors, and accessories finish the room. Then we do a full walkthrough with you. Anything that isn't right goes on a punch list and gets fixed before we call the project done.
